Safety First at Gunderson Construction

Gunderson Construction recognizes the importance of Risk Management and project safety. The Project Manager and site Superintendent will develop a Site Specific Safety Plan, provide direct oversight of safety management, documentation and training. In addition, every employee is involved in the safety process and charged with the responsibility to observe, identify and immediately react to unsafe acts or conditions.

Gunderson Construction understands that we are working in an owner occupied facility and that the safety of your staff, and our construction personnel on site is our first goal.

Project Superintendent

We are proud to have participated in a major safety program at APi Group, Inc.’s new training facility in New Brighton, MN, partnering with the Construction Health and Safety Excellence (C.H.A.S.E.) Minnesota, along with the Associated General Contractors of Minnesota and Minnesota O.S.H.A.

Gunderson Construction was awarded a Level 3, the highest level, for applicants striving to be an industry leader with a very comprehensive safety and health program.

The Gunderson Construction Site Specific Safety Plan begins at the earliest stage of the project. Gunderson Construction will develop a plan that is broken down into specific tasks which are further analyzed to identify hazards and determine appropriate control measures before work begins. The overriding objectives of the Site Specific Safety Plan are to:

  • Understand your project drivers,
  • Define the risks that can reasonably be associated within the scope of work,
  • Provide direction that eliminates and/or minimizes risk,
  • Determines if construction involves potential contact with hazardous waste,
  • Determines if construction traffic, deliveries or parking impact the client or surrounding neighborhood,
  • Identify emergency procedures, and
  • Communicate the control measures to be taken by subcontractors, employees and clients.

Once the Site Specific Safety Plan is developed, prequalified subcontractors and Gunderson Construction makes safety a contractual obligation. This ensures that our project partners are prepared to meet the highest level of safety standards set by Gunderson Construction and/or our client.

A weekly site inspection will be conducted by subcontractors pertaining to their own work, as well as overall site inspection conducted by Gunderson Construction. Any hazard discovered on the walk-through will be immediately corrected and all affected parties will be notified accordingly. Contractors that do not abate safety hazards in a timely manner will be disciplined in accordance with the Site Specific policy.

To consistently reinforce safety, all site construction personnel are required to attend an initial safety orientation to understand the risks identified with the project. All of our supervisory personnel are trained in conducting weekly “toolbox talks” which deal with various safety related topics that are specifically tailored to the particular project.
