The Waterless Urinal

The Waterless Urinal

New Green Products

Do you want to leave less of a carbon foot print?

Every year there are new “green” building products helping us help our environment.

Think about this…every time you flush a toilet, you use 1-2 gallons of water.  Now think about how many times a day…week…month…year you flush a toilet?!  So let’s say you flush the toilet 7 times per day…that is 14 gallons per day…98 gallons a week…2,940 gallons a month and a whopping 35,280 GALLONS PER YEAR!!!  That is A LOT of water 1 person uses flushing a toilet!!!!!

There is a product that can help combat that huge number.  The waterless urinal, which only uses 1 gallon of water per 72 hours!!  That’s about 900 gallons a year!!

These waterless urinals significantly reduce water usage not only saving the owners $$$ but also helping the environment.

Here are some stats on this top green product!!
  • Uses the same urinal cartridge as the standard urinals
  • The lithium Battery lasts at least 8 years
  • It is touch free (meaning you don’t need to flush after every use)
  • There is minimal maintenance

I am sure if you are much like myself, you think, “what does the research say and what’s the catch?!”  Right?

Based on the research of IEc and Aceti Associates, they developed the following recommendations for waterless urinals.
  • These urinals work well in most settings; however, in settings where the urinals are not maintained and there is a potential for misuse they found that these urinals did not work as effectively.

o   Urinals need to be wiped down daily.

o   Cartridges need to be changed regularly.

  • Installing the waterless urinals is easier during new construction versus trying to retrofit them into existing plumbing. To ensure effective use of these urinals

o   The drain line slope needs to be sufficient to avoid sediment build up

o   The drain height needs to match with the brand purchased

  • If you plan on installing a waterless urinal, you should look into the cost, savings, and payback to insure this is the best purchase for your home and/or project.

To sum it up; these urinals can drastically reduce the amount water we use in the restroom and would probably benefit any small business or home owner!

“The Hybrid Urinals reflect our dedication to sustainability and help reduce the water footprint,” says Mark Lawinger, product line manager – fixtures for Sloan. “[this urinal] combines the best of both worlds: water-free operation and periodic water injection that helps prevent the formation of calcite and easily removes any small amounts of struvite forming in the drain line.”
